Katy Reel

Saturday, April 2, 2005

Our Dear Friends,

You and your prayers are part of the rescue operation--I don't want you in the dark about that either. I can see your faces even now, lifted in praise for God's deliverance of us, a rescue in which your prayers played such a crucial part.
2 Corinthians 1:11

THE TURNING POINTS OF LIFE
It’s late into the second night at Good Samaritan Hospital. I am tired but grateful to be alone with my thoughts for a few minutes. Capturing reflections has been difficult for all of us. Maybe it’s because there aren’t any yet as this news is just too new and difficult. Probably it is because mere humans can’t make themselves accept information that is so outlandish that we do better with denial. How can life turn on a dime, change irreversibly with no warning or heads up? Just last night, which feels like last month, we found out our dear Katy has a brain tumor.

THE GIFT OF YOUNG LEADERS
Katy is a young leader here in our ministry. I should have told you about her long ago. I hope you all get to meet her one day. We tell stories about the kids, youth and indigenous leaders that are treasured here. There are other stories … beautiful stories … about young adults who God has attached to this community through His gracious transformations. “They are too young” some will say “to have such an understanding of the sacrificial ways in which they are giving their lives away.” Katy is one of these.

KATY REEL
You should see her! She has found her heart’s home in the ghettos of Phoenix. Her arms are never empty and children wrap around her easily. When she started her two year internship, now almost two years ago, she was “teacher Katy”. She began her work helping Ericka build the foundations for a favored part of the ministry, our Headstart partnership with the City of Phoenix. These young women took the raw material of moms, kids, schedule less families and taught everyone to come to school everyday. It was hard work, knocking on doors, waking moms up, getting kids dressed. All of this was so shocking to our City of Phoenix partners. They couldn’t believe this was the way we were going to DO school. This is year two and these preschoolers are now testaments to the tenacity of these young women’s labors. Change is everywhere, emotionally, academically, in manners, in hope, in future possibilities.
Katy is more than teacher; she is a friend to her kid’s moms. She has entered into MOMS PLACE as a mentor and lover. If Katy isn’t with these kids she is with their moms, and these families are now devoted to their tender hearted and loyal advocate.
God brought Katy to us through a series of miraculous interventions. A dear friend met Katy in Indianapolis at a missions conference when she was just finishing high school. Her specialness stood out! My friend mentioned her to me. She thought her unique calling to serve reminded her of our daughter Heather. Both were providentially going to the same Christian college. These two were introduced through our friend, became roommates at college for five years and became best friends. Katy did her first internship with us after her first year in college. She remembers saying to herself that summer seven years ago, “I know one day I’ll be back.”

PRAY FOR KATY
Katy was having headaches. She has just taken on a new role in our ministry, taking on the coordination of all the education pieces of Neighborhood Ministries. The transition has been a little stressful. Headaches made sense in that context, but these were terrible the past few days, especially last Wednesday. Accompanying the headaches was a funny loss of strength and numbness in her right arm and one night also in her leg. She knew something was wrong.
Last night we went to the emergency room for the headaches. A CAT SCAN found a mass on her brain. They are calling it a tumor. Today there was a MRI. The results are unknown as of yet but will give guidance for the next decisions.

What else can we do than ask you to pray with us for Katy.
I have one request, dear friends: Pray for Katy. Pray strenuously with and for her --to God the Father, through the power of our Master Jesus, through the love of the Spirit— Romans 15:30
· Please Pray about this tumor, that it would be demolished, destroyed, completely removed
· Pray for Katy, that her journey through this terrible disturbance would be one where Jesus is alive in every dimension giving her peace
· Pray for all the medical personnel, particularly her neurosurgeons, that they would be beyond their best for her in giving care
· Pray for the work she has so much responsibility for

And would you pray for us
· For her family from Indianapolis who are here now in town (mom – Patti, dad – Rick, brother – Lenny and sister – Amy)
· For our fragile “family”, the body of Christ here at The Neighborhood Center and Neighborhood Ministries who love Katy dearly and carry this suffering in its fragility
· For rest, for love exchanged everywhere, for faith, for conviction that Jesus can be glorified in these troubles! Be lifted up, Jesus, in this!

I WILL SEND YOU “KATY” UPDATES OFTEN.
PLEASE PASS THEM ON TO OTHERS WHO YOU KNOW WILL PRAY FOR HER.

Will you let me know that you are praying so I can tell her?
And we love you and treasure your bearing us up. Kit

“The man who prays raises the question of what the limits of hope may be. Prayer is his way of declaring that the boundaries of life and the limits of hope cannot be drawn with the crayons of time and space. The man who prays pushes hope into areas where men who never dream, never venture. And so it is not difficult for him to believe. He believes his prayer reaches God and that it influences reality although never in a strict cause-effect relationship. Prayer is successful not in terms of what it logically produces or pragmatically achieves but in terms of what it forces reality to experience.

Katy,

I got an e-mail from a man named Ramon Leon last night about the case manager position. I think he may have responded from that non-profit web page e-mail we put out. He doesn't have any experience with at-risk youth but anyway, thought you'd like to know that someone is reading our mass e-mail:)
Love to you,
Allison

Katy,
You have our prayers here at MentorKids... we as a group are continually lifing you up. I haven't known you very long as of yet, but I'm praying that our talk of regular lunches together will soon be the topic of converstation again... In this short time, these things I know and admire about you: your spirit speaks of strength, courage and grace under fire, your heart speaks of care and sacrifice for others and joy for what God is doing through you and around you... I pray God will sustain these qualities and send those around you to give them back to you. May God bring protection and healing quickly to your body!

Dear Katy,my heart is full with love and prayer for you and your family as you enter uncertain territory. I am reminded and desire to encourage you with a story from Gods word. A few years ago I had a large tumor removed from my colon. It was the first time I had been hospitalized for anything major. As I lay in the hospital bed listening to praise & worship cd of Micheal W. Smith, the Lord showed me a picture of the man who was carried on a mat by his friends to get to Jesus. Remember? they busted the roof out to get him there...He couldn't get there on his own because of his circumstance...but the passionate love of his friends..interceded for him and they carried him to the feet of Jesus. Suddenly I felt like that man and knew I was being carried on a bed of prayer straight to the feet of our Lord. It was a powerful comfort...I could feel the prayers of others lifting me up. And in turn I pray you too will feel the comfort of those who are praying...I am only one who will bust out the roof in prayer =) INHISLOVE dona from ODF

Katy,

Please know how much I love you and adore you. Hope you can feel my arms around you. I'm praying for you and have asked everyone I can think of to pray for you also. My sister has her church prayer group praying for you and I have asked many friends and family members to also pray for you. Wish I could be there with you. I'm sure Lenny is taking great care of you, though, and Amy will be there soon. I'm sure it means everything to have your Mom and Dad there, too.

Just know how much we all love you, Katy, and are thinking of you and praying for you!

Katy, We were at the Center last night helping to feed the kids dinner. Your spirit pervaded everything we did. What a blessing to be part of this NM family. So many prayers continue to be offered up. What a strong sense that God is completely in control and that all of this is for His glory. Your journey has become a visual reminder to us that He will work for your good amist such a challenge. Rick and I are privileged to be part of your "team". We watched expectantly and eagerly to see the wonderful ways God will show Himself to you, your family, your NM family, and now to the larger world. You are loved dear sister.

I am praying that God will grant you complete healing, trusting that He is doing for you what He knows is best for you. God will not fail you Katy! He has already won your eternal healing for you!

Hi Katy! Our family is in prayer for you, trusting God to be present with you and your family and to lead you and your medical team as you together make decisions concerning your health. Don't forget that nothing can separate you from God's love.

I've been praying Proverbs 3:5-6 for you, your family and your friends: "Trust in the Lord with all you heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight". Our "own understanding" fails us when we consider a 26 year old growing a brain tumor, so we need to lean on God's understanding instead. I'm also praying that you and yours will have the strength they need to face whatever tomorrow brings. We have a great God who will not fail us! Let's keep our eyes on Him!!

In Christ's love & mercy,

Mark, Sally, Jeremy, Charity & Peter

Katy,
The whole world seems to be praying right now - and certainly the whole congregation at TAB is aware and regularly lifting you up.
Now tomorrow is your birthday and I have asked the Lord to give you a very blessed gift. When this is all over I want you to pass it on to others who will need such assurance and healing as I have asked Christ to give to you.
In fact, it appears to be time for my regular middy appointment with the Boss so I will have another little chat about all this.

You are surrounded by His mercy and unmeasurable love. Remember how high, how wide, how long and how deep it is for each one of us. It is beyond us. You are my dear, dear friend and my precious sister in Christ. You are being lifted up to Him minute by minute by the sweet, sweet prayers of believers around the world. I am especially blessed by the prayers of our Moms as they and their children love you in prayer. Be blessed and comforted in the precious Spirit that surrounds you and the peace that fills your heart. God bless you and wrap His loving, protecting arms around you.

Precious, precious Katy,
We were at Carrie's new house in Iowa helping her unpack when we got the news - and Carrie and I prayed immediately (thankfully Danny was napping so he wasn't terrorizing the house!!). Carrie is hoping to get to a computer so that she can get in touch with you. We are "praying without ceasing" for God's strength, wisdom, courage, healing and peace. John has invited many from Tab over to pray tonight. What an awesome, good, loving and powerful Lord is our Savior! What reassurance to know that we can completely trust Him with our lives and with yours! We thank Him for the beautiful witness you are and all of your family. We love you dearly - and please give your Mom and Dad hugs for us!

Katy, what a joy it was to see you and your family today at the hospital. You radiated peace. I came to minister to you and you ministered to me! We can't wait to see what the Lord will accomplish through you. I'm reminded of Psalm 145:17-20a:" The Lord is righteous in all His ways, and kind in all His deeds. The Lord is near to ALL who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth. He will fulfill the desire of those who fear Him; He will also hear their cry and save them. The Lord keeps all who love Him.." Hear our cry, faithful Lord, as we say to that mountain of a tumor with our mustard seeds of faith, "MOVE!"

Remember, Rick and Patti, that we are only a short drive away. We're here for you.

Much love, Vicki King

We pray for daily bread, of all things. God meets the simplest person on his/her own terms. A farmer prays for rain, a Father prays for his daughters and sons. So it makes perfect sense for us to pray for God to restore Katy to beautiful health, to fill the Reel family with grace and strength. We love and are praying for all the Reels, and especially sweet Katy. We'll be praying for Amy and Lenny also, and won't forget the extra burdens that Rick and Patty have also been carrying regarding their parents health and welfare.

Hello Katy,
You don't know me, but I received a call Saturday from one of my greatest loves, she was extremely worried about her friend who had just been diagnosed with a brain tumor. She told me where you were and I knew that you could not be in better hands. I have watched Dr. Willis very carefully these last three years. I manage his practice. His skill is amazing. I understand you met Dr. Kriegsfeld who is the senior partner of the practice and I would like to share with you what he said to me about 4 months ago when we were discussing Dr. Willis. He told me that Byron's skill is exceptional, a gift, he said that there are good surgeons but rare are those with talent like Byron's. Katy, before this month our practice was not on call for Good Sam on the first weekend of each month, and the surgeons in our practice had switched call with each other only last month. I do not believe that this was mere coincidence. I don't believe your care is in the hands of any doctor but in His. I will pray that His hands guide Dr. Willis and bring you a speedy recovery.

Much love,
Alma Alonzo

WE BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!

Dearest Reel family:

When we heard of Katy’s diagnosis on Saturday morning, we felt like it was happening to one of our own children. It overwhelmed us and brought us to our knees praying. If only we could be there, holding your hand on Wednesday.

Brains are not good things to mess with. It puts the message in bold with an underline and an exclamation mark. Where do we begin to pray? We only know that we never stop.

On Sunday, when we knew it was a tumor we prayed that it was benign, small and unobtrusive.
That would definitely make prayers easier. But that’s not what God had in mind. By Tuesday it appears to be more serious than we would want to imagine. How God is defining our faith with the dimensions of this tumor.

There have only been two other times that I have yelled out loud to God. The first time was when Sean’s eye started to wander and we couldn’t get in to the ophthalmologist for six weeks. I cried out to God thanking Him for this wandering eye, accepting it like a blessing and knowing that God would heal Sean. The second time was during Ryan’s first tour-of-duty in Iraq. I just said to God, “Bring my boy home to me – safe and alive.”

I know that I will be yelling again. I believe it will be for healing and peace.

God is sovereign. God is awesome. We will be amazed at the work of His hands all over again. He will show us love in ways we could never comprehend. We will be blown over by His power. “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28

We remain steadfast in prayer,

Jill, Mike, Sean and Colin

Dear Katy and Reel family,
We have been praying so much since we got the news on Saturday. In church on Sunday, John was obviously very moved by your situation as he exhorted us to pray for you. We all were moved! As prayer ministers, Scott and I had the priviledge on Sunday of "floating" between various small groups in the contemporary service as we all gathered to pray for various needs. I can assure you that EVERY group I went to was beseeching the Father for you. I think everyone feels the enormity of this situation and the call to prayer that it brings. I know I have told every Christian I have spoken to about it during the last several days and they all have taken it to heart and promised to pray. Scott is going to fast and pray for you tomorrow at work (Wed) and says he hopes that God makes his stomach rumble a lot so he can be constantly reminded to pray! I'm glad that God is bigger than this tumor and this situation, and can bring much good out of what seems, in our own eyes, to be really scarey. We'll pray for supernatural peace, for complete restoration of your body, for very skilled surgery by your doctors, for your family who will be waiting, and anything else God brings to mind! "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)

Love,

Mary Anne and Scott Emch, David and Rebecca.

Dear Katy,
8 years ago I was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. For the next year I "lived" in the promise of God in Isaiah 41:10. " Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand" and then verse 12 says "Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them, those who wage war against you will be as nothing and perish"
Verse 12 were the leukemia cells in my case.God is faithful to his promises and I was cured(it did take some nasty chemo therapy and an autologous stem cell transplantand and lots of prayer from the Tab family).I will pray these verses for you, Katy, and verse 12 will be your tumor.
Love in Christ,
Vibeke Rasmussen, former member of Tab, and a friend of your parents.

Katy;
As I pray for you today I will also begin sending you the pages of my wonderful story : "La Bonita Senorita" in which you and Ratus share the starring roles. You can help me with the story as it progresses in the weeks ahead, but I will begin the first chapter and send it to you. Together we will write a story you will be able to share with the children you love and who love you. After all, you are their heroine so its only fair you have your own story.

Dear Miss Reel,
We were both saddened and shocked to hear about your illness. You are in our daily prayers. It has been heartwarming for us to read about how successful you have been in Phoenix helping disadvantaged children and their families. We felt very honored to have our son, Tristan Navarro, in your class at Ocean View Elementary because it was easy for us to see that you have a special gift for working with children. You always made the parents feel so comfortable and you cared about our concerns for our children. A group of parents from Tristan's first grade class were able to form special friendships and still remain friends today and we always credit this to you.

May God bless you and may you have a complete and speedy recovery.

Love, Christine, Robert, Tristan and Vincent Navarro

We praise God for the successful removal of much of the tumor. We continue to pray for you, for the elimination of the rest of the tumor, and for it never to return. So many people have written about your incredible strength. It is evident to me that you are an incredibly godly woman, and your strength comes from Him. May God bless your health. Katy,
Dear sweet Katy,
Praying for you on Wednesday was awesome. People came and went in the NM Prayer Room as we began at 7 a.m. and went until news of your surgery reached us. There were several precious moments. Like when Kala & Vero & Maria & Irene came trouping in with most of their kids. It was a Moms Place Prayer! A little distracting, a little funny, but always very precious. Fabian & Javier moving from one lap to another. Javi playing with Jeremy Wood's toes. Carlitos nursing and pooping. Moms who stopped to ask questions so they could understand better. It was sweet. We sang "Jesus loves me" twice. After about 20 minutes they all filed out for GED. You would have loved it!
Next precious thing was when Dora came with Esmi (another slight distraction!) and WITH DOROTHY!!!!! We prayed together for about 20 minutes before they had to leave.
You are loved, loved, loved sweet girl. God is doing some amazing things in this craziness. We continue to pray, and trust, and hope.
Love Susan

Dear Katy and Family -

Things looked pretty bleak for the inhabitants of Jerusalem when Sennecherib's army camped around the city (II Kings 19). In fact, the Jews realized that no other city had ever been able to withstand an attack or siege by this Assyrian army, they were next on his list, and were militarily powerless to stop him. But it all changed in verse 35. May God do for you what he did for the for Jews that day. You're already doing what Hezekiah and Isaiah did - they prayed, trusted, praised and prayed. And so are we and so many we know - family at Tab, those at The Oaks (Elizabeth's class, too), and friends near and far who know the Father's love and compassion that stretches so far beyond our human understanding.

With our love and continuing prayers,

Elizabeth and Dan Hamilton,
Jennifer and Andrew

Katy Katy – Katie arrived home last night, I am glad she back in Indy, but I know it was hard for her to leave Phoenix. We hear you have wonderful friends there!

I put off sending an email because, I did not know what to say – Should I tell you how we hurt for you and your family, or should we try to cheer you up?
Therefore, this message is a bit of both:

Katy, thank you for being such a wonderful, Godly friend to our Katie. You continue to influence her life with your grace.

Patti and Rick – thank you for raising Katy to be who she is. We cannot say we know what you are going through right now, but we care!

Over the last few days between tears, God would remind me of some the happy times: the one that made me laugh the most was your grandmother’s lipstick being chewed up by our dog and smeared all over the carpet! Oh what a mess! So get better and we will send you a case of lipstick!

We have a friend – David Lewis who is also suffering from a brain tumor. David has works with international missions and was with us on our first mission trip to Africa. Our Pastor, sent an email prayer a few weeks ago, that touched my heart so much I saved it and have now made it my prayer for you: “Lord, there lies Katy, your servant, your child, a dear friend to many. Beside Katy are her beloved family and friends, look upon them all with mercy … provide your peace, comfort, and strength only possible by Your presence & Spirit. In addition, Lord, you know my heart, please touch Katy. Please guide those wonderful servants of healing in the medical profession who are there. And, yes, Lord, we pray … give the healing only possible from your Hand … in the strong name of Jesus – Amen.”

We love you all!

Dear Katy,
It was great talking to you today. Your grace, dignity, courage, faith and humor are incredible. You have a unique strength and confiction that are inspirational. Your ability to be concerned about the welfare of others during your time of need is humbling. You make us all better people by your example. Should your Great Aunt Sue and I ever decide to grow up, we want to be like you!
Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers every day. In fact, our whole church has prayed for you the last two Sundays.
Remember that miracles do happen and that don't have to look any further for proof than your Great Aunt Sue's miraculous recovery (with God's help) from cancer nine years ago. After all, you two share a lot in common: those great Heidenreich longevity genes and you are both tall, beautiful blondes (well maybe not tall).
We are looking forward to seeing you the weekend after next.
Lots of love,

Dear Katy,

I am not sure we have ever met, but if we did, I am sure you were very, very young. I am your second cousin Scott Johnston. My parents Chuck and Sue told me about your surgery last night. I was stunned and almost breathless when I heard the news. I had heard about you from my parents when you were in school in LA. In fact, I think I tried to help your Dad find you a car either in LA or Phoenix at one time. Anyways, after visiting this site and reading about you and hearing from you, I can see that your unconditional faith has carried you this far and will continue to do so. Your faith, strength and courage are unbelievable and encouraging to everyone. On behalf of my family, I want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Please get well very soon!

Dear Katy, Rick, Patty, Amy & Lenny,
Sue and I support a cancer resource center in West LA that is part of a larger nationwide resource center. It is calle The Wellness Community. It provides outstanding, free services to cancer patients and their families, including counseling, support groups for patients and families, education, alternative care choices, etc.
I have checked on the Phoenix chapter and found that they are a very active cancer resource center. You may already know of them, but if you don't they are well worth checking out. They are not a "woe is me" kind of organization. They are a "it is your life and we are here to help you live it". You can look them up at info@twccaz.org. The phone is 602 712 1006, and they are at 360 E Palm.
Sue and I are looking forward to seeing you soon. We will be in Phoenix 4/22. In the meantime, we continue to pray for you all and marvel in your strength.
Love,
Uncle Chuck and Aunt Sue

Halleluiah! I fell to my knees in praise of our gracious and loving God Almighty after I read Katy's latest entry extolling her good news!

Katy, I had every faith that the Lord would spare your life because, as I said before, your work here is not done. Infact, I believe it has just begun...The world needs you Katy and God has just proven the HE agrees!

I love all of you with every inch of my heart. Uncle Frenchy gave me your cell phone number so expect a call from me soon.

Love and Hugs...
Karen Craft (Billy & Dad too)

I guess technically I'm your second cousin (your dad is my mom's nephew). Anyway, on behalf of my family, we want you to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers.

Katy,
Our family in Houston is praying for you. The hand of God is obviously moving in your life through the NM family. Your faith in His hand of mercy is a testimony to all of us. The most recent news today is encouraging as we continue to pray.
Be blessed to be a blessing,
Max

Katy,

We are all just thrilled for you over the GOOD NEWS. Our loving Father is always true to His word and we read in Luke 11:
"If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?"— He has granted our Prayers, We will be Bold and ask for more in your behalf.
Your brother in Christ, Al Wills

Katy and family,
Great news on the pathology report. Aunt Sue's oncologist said that he believes that the cancer patients that do the best are those that have a strong faith and that have a strong network of family and friends who have faith. He sure seems to be right!
The Pacific Palisades Chapter of the American Cancer Society is doing a 24 hour relay this Saturday. Aunt Sue is participating in the survivors leg of the relay, which is a one hour run/walk. I am doing a later leg. There is also an evening illuminary for those currently under going cancer treatment. You will have a candle.
We have our hotel arrangements made for next week. We are staying at the Phoenix Hyatt downtown. We will arrive next Friday bearing gifts and goodies. We are anxious to see you all. In the meantime, we, our family and friends and our church are praying for you all.
Love,
Aunt Sue and Uncle Chuck

Dear Miss Reel,
I miss you very much. When I heard you had a brain tumor I was very sad. I still remember how nice you were to me. I hope you like it in Arizona. I just went there for spring break. I went to the Grand Canyon. We are practicing for the cat 6. We pray for you every night before we go to bed. I have 525 points in Reading Counts. My report card was excellent. You would be very proud of me. My sister, Nicole, remembers when she helped out at a holiday party. She is also doing very well in school. I still remember when you came to my birthday party with Miss Kinard. You are a very special teacher. May God's love always be with you. Love,
Andrew, Nicole, Becky, and Armando Fraga.

Dear Katy: our close friends, Pano and Sperry have been telling us about you and asked us to put you on our church's prayer chain. It is obvious that you are a very special woman and even now, you are continuting to touch people's lives. We are praying that you would sense God's presence in a powerful way...holding you, sustaining you, healing you. God bless you! Love, Dave & Julie Healis

Katy
I just came from a prayer gathering here at TAB. The prayer vigil has ben going all day and ended with a great service of prayer and celebration for you and your family. We held the vigil in the McKee Chapel and the prayer service in the parlor. There is power here, Katy - and it is come to you in Phoenix. We are SO proud of your ministry there in Phoenix and jealous of it too - for many yound ones here in Indy also need someone like La Bonita Senorita to be a blessing and show God's love in such a tangible way. Love flows from you and the children [and their parents]feel it and know its source. In you Christ is known and shown.
As for this trial - it shall pass; but the impact you are making on so many will not. Well done, good and faithful servant! I believe our Lord is greatly pleased.
RATUS
