Monday's report

Today the radiation oncologist, the chemotherapy oncologist and one of Dr. Willis’ associates, and another neurosurgeon involved in Katy’s treatment came by for their consult. Without the internet to reference all the terms, all the new definitions, all the potential procedures … we are realizing that none of us, except for Heather have had any medical course work. In fact, yesterday I told you that Katy’s tumor was in the temporal lobe. It isn’t. It is in the parietal lobe.

Parietal Lobe is one of the four lobes of the cerebral hemisphere. It controls tactile sensation, response to internal stimuli, sensory comprehension, some language, reading, and some visual functions.

Katy’s mom took good notes today with all the visits, trying to capture what Katy will be facing on Wednesday and subsequent to the surgery. The tumor has infiltrated the brain; therefore it needs more treatment after the surgery (like chemo and radiation). It is near critical areas of the brain making the removal of the tumor very delicate.

Today though was also the first day where there seemed to be some space to think. We took advantage of this and asked our physician friends in Phoenix to discern with us if Katy was at the right hospital and in the right care. A friend who is head of ICU at Good Samaritan found out Katy was in his hospital and came in to both offer to care for Katy when she comes in ICU after surgery and affirm the giftedness of her neurosurgeon. Another friend knows the chief medical officer of this hospital. Our friend got him to come by for a visit, again to offer his support and affirm the neurosurgeon. The good reputation of Katy’s doctor has preceded him. Our medical friends have confirmed the peace everyone has had, these visits felt miraculous, like confirmations in the flesh. She is in the right place.

People are praying everywhere … one of Katy’s Headstart children prayed with a group last night … “Jesus, love me, love Katy, touch Katy’s head and make her better”. Pretty much sums it up!

Her room is filling up with balloons and flowers … and is always filled with people. We read the messages out loud from this blog today. The children from the ministry made cards to give to her tomorrow, hundreds of expressions of love. The cooking class made cakes for her birthday party tomorrow, her favorite kind.

And in a direct answer to prayer, Katy’s sister was able to make flight arrangements to leave Rome tomorrow, arriving tomorrow night in time for the birthday.

God’s handiwork was visible today … multiple gifts of love, expressions of the crying out of God’s people for healing and intervention, the anticipation of the family being all together, and the choosing of the medical people who are to care for Katy through this.

We are expecting a lot of people to come by the hospital for the birthday party out in the “healing garden”. Who wants to help with food?

Dear Katy,
We remember you fondly from Tab. You are in our thoughts and prayers constantly. We pray that God will make your doctor His own instrument, guiding his hands to remove the tumor completely. We ask Jesus to be always at your side, carrying you through this experience, and give you 100% healing. We also pray especially for Patty, Rick, Lenny and Amy that they will be calmed and comforted by the Holy Spirit and that He will continue to strengthen your friends at Neighborhood Ministries.

Dearest Katy, Your picture on my refrigerator is a constant reminder of your work with Neighborhood Ministries. Memories of my visit last Fall include special times with you and the children and their moms and the love you shared with me for them. Your are a special gift to your family, our family and the family of NM in Phoenix. Jon was with me on Sunday nite and I prayed with him for you before he left. I continue to lift you and your family up in prayer throughout the days. I hope that you have a wonderful birthday celebration today. I am am so glad Amy got there. Happy Birthday! Katy, we just learned about what's going on in your life today from an e-mail sent out by Scott Reitano asking for prayer for you from all who are in his men's bible study. John and I stopped immediately to pray for a miracle for you and for the peace that passes all understanding to be in the hearts and minds of all of you, especially you, your mom and dad and Lenny and Amy and your dear family through Neighborhood Ministries. Praise God for how many lives you have touched with your love! We pray this is your miracle birthday.

Dear Katy-
I am sure you don't remember me, but I remember your wonderful family. I am Nancy Kisling's niece, and I remember coming to your house when I was down visiting Chase. You were the same age as me, and you & your family always made me feel welcome when I came over. Even though I don't know you well, I know what Aunt Nancy thinks of you & your family, and it broke my heart when I heard of the past weekend. Please know that you & your whole family are in my prayers and thoughts daily.

Here is our prayer from Ephesians Chapter 3:

14 For this reason (Katy’s healing) I kneel before the Father,

15 from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth (the Good People at Neighborhood Ministries) derives its name.

16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, (that healing power indeed does strengthen Katy and wipes out any and all cancer cells)

17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, (that God’s love and the love of those closest to you permeate your entire being and the witness of Jesus Christ is multiplied beyond our imagination-)

18 may have power, together will all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ. (– that you may feel His all encompassing love throughout this entire ordeal)

19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge-that you may be filled to the measure of all fullness of God. (that all of us know that God will always be there in His fullness)

This friend of friends (the Guideros, in Indy) in Tucson believes God can shrink tumors, and even utterly destroy them. I know He is not overwhelmed by these circumstances, as scary as they are to us mere mortals. I join in all the prayers for God to be glorified, and for Katy to be healed--directly, or through continued medical intervention. I will continue to check the blog for updates. Grace, mercy, and the peace of God our Father be with you and in you all.

Katy,

I just read the e-mails and story of what you have been going through at mom and dad's house. I just spoke to your father last friday and he said that you were doing wonderful things out in Phoenix. I know that I have not kept in touch really over the last several years, however I often think about you and what you are doing. You are a wonderful person Katy, and always have been. You are one of the most honest,caring, and selfless people that I have met in my life. I am praying for you and your family.

Miriam G. told me of your situation, and we prayed for you today at Bethany House (Gospel Rescue Mission in Tucson.) Here are a couple thoughts that helped during my cancer treatment in 2004:

Katy, Patti, Rick, Lenny and Amy,

You are in my prayers. I have asked the Upper Room prayer network to add you to their list. People around the world will be praying for you.

I'm glad that Katie and Anne were able to get to Phoenix. The three of you are quite a trio. You've been through the best of times and the worst of times.

I have been reminiscing about days past. I laughed thinking about the sleep overs, dressing Andrew up, and conversations at meals around our table.

Know that there are lots of us praying for your health and strength.
